Apple Cinnamon Rolls

This is a classic dessert from the 1930's. The recipe comes from a Westinghouse oven manual book. If you would like to make a healthier version of this dish you could use coconut sugar with a little honey in place of the brown sugar. You could use coconut oil in place of the butter. You could use a 1 for 1 gluten free flour mixture in place of the pastry flour. Of course, the results will not be exactly the same but may come close. If you substitute, let us know what you did and how it turned out!

Ingredients
 2 cups pastry flour
 4 tsp baking powder
 1 tsp salt
 2 tbsp butter, melted
 2 tsp cinnamon
 ½ cup brown sugar
  cup milk
 2 cups finely peeled and cut apples
 2 tbsp butter, melted for bottom of pan
 ¾ cup brown sugar, for bottom of pan

Directions

Sift the flour, measure, then sift again with the baking powder and salt

Cut in butter until mixture looks like corn meal

Add milk to make a soft dough

Roll out to 1/4 inch in thickness

Spread with melted butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar

Press the apples into the dough

Roll up like a jelly roll, seal the edges

Cut into 8 equal slices

In the bottom of a rectangular baking dish, melt 2 Tbsp butter

Add 3/4 cup brown sugar

Take the 8 slices and place cut side down into butter, brown sugar mixture

Place in cold oven. Turn oven to 375 degrees F

Bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes
